Buying the right rug for your home, office, vacation home, etc. can be very stressful. There are so many different colors, styles, and textures. We have come up with a few tips to make your search quicker and easier. Here are a couple of things you should consider before purchasing a rug.

1. Size

Figure out the size of the area you want to cover and from there you will also be able to imagine its shape. With today’s technology rugs are so diverse and come in so many different shapes and sizes. When deciding on the perfect rug size, you should measure the size of the room or area where you want to place the rug. After that, you should subtract about 12 inches from both the length and width in order to let the floor underneath to become a border. Then search for a rug that matches that size as close as possible.

2. Color

Decide on the color of rug you’re going to want depending on your décor in that room. Color is a very important characteristic to look for in a rug. The color of a rug sets the tone and feel in a room. Most likely you will want to match or compliment some part of the room to your rug.

3. Design

Choose a design motif. There are two main categories for design which are all-over and medallion. An all-over design is one that has the same motif throughout the entire rug. Persian and Oriental rugs are examples of an all-over design. A medallion design is one that has a main picture in the middle. There are many beautiful medallion design rugs to choose from.

4. Pattern

Pick a pattern type. There are three main patterns which are curvilinear, geometric and pictorial. Curvilinear patterns consist of flowing, curving lines. Geometric patterns are comprised of straight lines and shapes with straight lines. Pictorial designs are usually a picture more than a pattern, for example an animal or a person.

5. Style

Select the style that compliments you and the specific room you are thinking about placing the rug. Style is vital for creating the main look and feel of a room.
